Exhibit of Ohio LGBT lives will be at Pride festivals
by Rob Berger
Columbus-A celebration of the lives of LGBT Ohioans will be on display in June, appearing at several Pride festivals.
"Pride of Ohio" demonstrates the breadth of LGBT talents and contributions, featuring the work of 18 photographers, architects, writers, attorneys, activists, philosophers, actors, and composers.
The display, created by the Gay Ohio History Initiative, will be on view throughout Pride Month at Stonewall Columbus. Two additional sets will be displayed at Pride events in Cincinnati, Dayton and Cleveland.
This touring exhibit is a key part of the history initiative's mission to preserve, archive, and curate the history and culture of the LGBT citizens of Ohio, to tell the truth about our lives, to create opportunities for understanding of both the past and what is hoped for in the future, to share LGBT culture and history with all Ohioans, and to encourage us to savor our existence.
After Pride Month, community organizations will have the opportunity to borrow portions of the exhibit to display themselves.
In addition to this exhibit, the Gay Ohio History Initiative and its partners have set up an endowment fund and developed an LGBT history collection plan. The initiative is in the process of collecting letters, pictures, documents, oral histories, memorabilia, videos, and one, two, and three-dimensional objects. It is also interesting in working with groups and organizations across Ohio to collect and preserve LGBT history.
To learn more about the Gay Ohio History Initiative or to volunteer, donate items, or make a monetary contribution, see the group's website www.gohi.org, or contact Gay Ohio History Initiative, 815 North High St, Suite II, Columbus 43215; 614-268-8525 or toll free 866-452-6397.
